How to check the health of the heating element

Even with the most modern washing machines, boilers, electric kettles, heating elements are used to heat water. The main part is a spiral made of resistive wire (fechral or nichrome). It is placed in a flask (ceramic, stainless steel or composite alloy) and connected to a source of electrical energy. The average lifespan of the heating element is 3-5 years.

But under certain circumstances, the user may notice that home appliances are not working properly. The water is not heated at all, or the set temperature is reached very slowly. One of the possible reasons is the breakdown of the heating element.

You can immediately contact a specialized workshop or call a familiar master. But with even minimal knowledge in the field of electrical engineering, the heating element can be replaced by yourself. But first you need to make sure that the reason for the inoperative state of technology lies in it.

How to check the health of the heating element? There are several fairly simple ways. Let's look at them in detail.

Most probable causes of heating elements breakdown

Experts point out the following among the most popular reasons for the failure of heating elements:

  • too high voltage applied to the device. As a result, the incandescent spiral burns out;
  • the spiral for various reasons, for example, due to a factory defect, touches shell;
  • over the years of operation, the heater body has become covered with a thick layer of scale. Heat transfer inevitably deteriorates. To warm up the water to the set temperature, the heating element works for hours without shutting down. This often causes the coil to burn out.

It is important to note that regardless of the cause of the malfunction, the heating elements, with rare exceptions, cannot be repaired. It is impossible to remove the coil and replace it, as the case cannot be disassembled.

But before contacting the "TEN Empire" for a new heating element, you need to make sure that the existing one is really faulty. All of the methods listed below are equally useful for checking the heating element in a washing machine, dishwasher, boiler, or heating boiler. Only the shape of the heater and the place of its installation change.

Visual inspection

First, the heating element must be dismantled, acting in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. The equipment is previously disconnected from the network to avoid electric shock.

The removed heating element is carefully examined. If there is a lot of scale on it, it is better to remove it with citric acid or vinegar. After soaking, the pieces of scale are removed with a knife so as not to damage the case.

Next, you need to inspect the clean shell. If it has bulges, black spots, cracks, chips, the heating element needs to be replaced. It cannot be operated further. It is not necessary to cover up defects with a sealant, various adhesives. It won't help.
