Cherry Shokoladnitsa

Cherry Shokoladnitsa - Russian gardeners love this variety and willingly grow it. Breeders work tirelessly to develop new winter-hardy varieties of this crop. More than twenty years ago, this cherry variety was tested. The excellent consumer qualities of the fruits and their tolerance to low temperatures were highly appreciated by lovers of this culture.

Cherry Shokoladnitsa

Scientists of the All-Russian Research Institute of Breeding of Fruit Crops have crossed cherry varieties: the late mutant Consumer goods black and Lyubskaya. As a result, a new variety appeared, which was named Shokoladnitsa. The color and quality of the berries were passed on to him from the first parent. And from the second - winter hardiness, short stature and partial self-fertility. In 1996 Shokoladnitsa was registered in the register of breeding achievements of the Russian Federation in the Central Region. Mid-latitude gardeners are very interested in it.

Description Shokoladnitsa cherry

The tree is not tall (2–2.5 m), which is an advantage of the variety, since its short stature has always been appreciated by gardeners. In this case, it is easier to care for plants and harvest. Shoots of medium thickness, straight, can grow up to 70 cm per season.

A low tree (2–2.5 m) Cherry Shokoladnitsa has a reverse-pyramidal crown of medium density

Fruit ripening occurs in mid-July, which characterizes the variety as mid-season. Flowering occurs in the second decade of May. The inflorescences consist of three large flowers. According to the State Register, the variety is partially self-fertile. The description of VNIISPK contains information about the complete self-fertility of Shokoladnitsa.

Fruits are flat-round in shape with a medium funnel and a slightly depressed top, large (height 1.7 cm, width 1.9 cm), their weight is 3–3.5 grams. The color is almost black with a mirror shine. The name Shokoladnitsa got its name due to the color of the fruit. Small bones are well separated from the pulp, the fruits are easily removed from the stem.

The pulp is dark red in color, has a dense structure, very juicy. Taste sweet and sour, according to some reviews with a slight bitterness, like a sweet cherry. The content of sugars - 12.4%, acids - 1.6%. Despite the slight sourness, in terms of sweetness Shokoladnitsa is not inferior to individual varieties of cherries. The tasting score according to the State Register is 4.6 points, in the description of VNIISPK 3.8-4.0 points are indicated. The direction of use is universal, the fruits are consumed fresh, and they can also be frozen and dried. After processing, products of excellent quality are obtained: jams, compotes, liqueurs, drinks.

The variety begins to bear fruit in 4–5 years. From one tree you can get 11-12 kg of fruits. The average annual yield on an industrial scale is 78 c / ha, the maximum is 97 c / ha. This is not bad, but far from the best indicator for this culture. For example, the maximum yield of Turgenevka cherries reaches 200 c / ha.

Winter hardiness of wood and buds is high, which is a big plus for the growing region of the variety. And also the trees are drought tolerant. The variety is affected by coccomycosis and moniliosis, which is a significant drawback.

The main advantages of the Shokoladnitsa cherry variety are its resistance to low temperatures, drought resistance, relative short stature and excellent taste of the product.
