On self-confidence: what does it mean in psychology, what does it mean for a person

Self-confidence what is

Confidence is a state of mind that expresses the absence of fear of mistakes, the desire for infallibility in general. Confidence is the term for freedom from doubt. Self-confidence is an adequate assessment of one's skills and abilities, an objective self-assessment, in which success in overcoming obstacles and achieving a goal becomes more highly probable.

Pay attention! Overestimation of oneself, one's capabilities and knowledge has a definition of self-confidence. Underestimation - self-doubt.

Self-confidence is an unreasonable confidence of an individual that he has no shortcomings, negative character traits. Such a person is inclined to take risks, does not attach importance to real threats, in particular, to his health. Self-doubt is the fear of making decisions, acting in general, due to doubts about one's own strengths, skills, knowledge. The basis of such insecurity is that a person does not actually trust himself, so it needs to be overcome. These qualities are harmful to a person, therefore it is considered important to achieve a golden mean.

Self-Confidence: Psychology

Self-confidence is a concept in psychology that describes an emotional state or a stable personal quality, the essence of which is to accept one's individuality, to evaluate positively one's abilities, skills and rights. Confidence in psychology is the ability to allow oneself to have certain requests and the absence of fear or feelings of guilt when presenting them to the environment, initiative and courage in social contacts.

From the point of view of psychology, confidence is the norm, a sign of a healthy, harmonious personality. This is a quality that every person should strive for while engaging in self-development. Self-confidence must be distinguished from self-confidence (the belief in the absence of negative qualities, arrogance, a tendency to disdain others).

The following skills are the hallmarks of a confident personality.

  • Playfulness, inclination to improvisation, open and spontaneous self-expression.
  • Ability to admit one's mistakes, but without self-deprecation and self-criticism.
  • Calm perception of both claims and compliments addressed to you.
  • Ability to discuss, directly and honestly express your own opinion, even if it is unpopular in society.
  • Ability to repeat a request, question, remind another to the person about the promise made to them. Willingness to defend their interests and rights.

For an insecure person, the presentation of his point of view, achievements, needs, desires is accompanied by a lot of negative experiences (fear, embarrassment, shame, guilt). The more unsure a person is, the more difficult it is for him to take active steps to achieve his goals, to make independent decisions. Too much energy is wasted in worry and doubt. Possible failures do not scare a confident person and do not unsettle for a long time.

Sometimes a person tries to hide his lack of self-confidence behind aggressive, defiant behavior. But in the end he runs into misunderstanding and reciprocal aggression from others, which only enhances his sense of his own inferiority. A self-confident person treats others kindly, rejoices in others' successes, does not get upset if in some way inferior to others.
