Framework Laptop will be another attempt at a modular laptop

Modern laptops are becoming less and less maintainable. The thinner and lighter they are, the more difficult it is to repair them, the more independently. Against this backdrop, the small company Framework offers a laptop with a choice of modules, which are partially made from recycled plastic and aluminum. Perhaps, in the future, they will get to gaming laptops.

Some users are unhappy that manufacturers in recent years prefer to produce thin and light notebooks at the expense of upgrades and repairs. Many laptops retain components that can be changed and upgraded, such as RAM and solid state drives. As for the Macbook, these components are soldered to the motherboard there. Other components, such as the battery and Touch Bar, are difficult to reach even for professional repairmen.

On smartphones, the lack of repair capabilities has long been common, and there are also manufacturers that go against the tide, such as Pine64 and Fairphone. They produce smartphones with the ability to repair, modular and even environmentally friendly, but they are far from mass distribution.

For laptops, the Framework startup this week announced a similar device with the ability to change and update components. This laptop has a 13.2-inch 3: 2 aspect ratio, 2256 x 1504 resolution, over 400 nits brightness. The components are housed inside a 16 mm thick aluminum case and weighs 1.3 kg. There are three 11th Gen Intel Tiger Lake processors with integrated Xe graphics to choose from, namely the i5-1135G7, i7-1165G7, or i7-1185G7 models. For wireless communication, you can install the Wi-Fi 6E module.

The processor cannot be changed as it is soldered to the motherboard in the form of a BGA chip. In the future, developers promise new motherboards as new processor models are released. In this sense, a lot depends on Intel.

You can supply two 32GB DDR4-3200 RAM modules each, as well as install a solid state drive up to 4TB M. 2280 NVMe. The slot supports 4-lane PCIe 4. so you can connect to the fastest consumer SSDs available today.

Four USB-C ports are located in the recess of the case, allowing you to install any ports for your needs through removable modules. USB-C connectivity allows for USB-A, HDMI, microSD, DisplayPort, and even a headphone jack. You can choose which side of the laptop these connectors will be on.

You can also change the monitor as it attaches with magnets. There is a 1080p webcam and microphone inside the monitor, both have physical shutters to ensure privacy. The key travel on the keyboard is 1.5 mm, it will be possible to display a localized version of the keyboard. A 55 Wh battery is used, which, if desired, can also be replaced, since it is not glued.

The laptop will run Windows 10 or Linux. The cost has not yet been announced, but it is known that it will be possible to assemble the laptop yourself from the components. Many of the components will be available in the Framework Store, which is open to third-party vendors.

Framework Laptop will be another attempt at a modular laptop

The field of construction of modular structures is becoming more and more popular every year, seriously competing with the traditional construction services.

Benefits and scope

The main advantage of the modular construction technology is the execution of work in a short time. The basis of such structures are container blocks, while if the construction of a very massive structure is not expected, there is a possibility of construction without a foundation.

The indisputable advantages of modular buildings are:

The area of application of modular buildings is quite diverse, to a greater extent the use of such buildings depends on the wishes and requirements of the customer. Typically modular buildings are used as:

  • pavilions for trade;
  • medical points;
  • country houses;
  • premises for storage and domestic purposes ;
  • offices.

Design options and stages of construction

Among the many design options, three main types are used in design.

  • Steel frame structure. Houses of this design are distinguished by increased efficiency, but they do not always comply with environmental safety standards.
  • A small house with smooth corners. Often, such a building is used as a recreation area near the main building, or it is used as an economic or household structure.
  • Wooden building. A modular structure made of wooden beams not only has an attractive appearance, but also, from the point of view of environmental standards, is absolutely safe.

When erecting a modular house, the main stages of work are:

• determination of area, number of floors, location of floors, options for future finishing; • definition of the type of building; • measurement and planning of the land plot; • production and assembly of modular structures; • delivery of structural elements to the construction site; • installation of the structure.

The installation technology depends on the type of modular structure, the most common are two main types of structures:

  • block-container - such a structure is delivered to the customer in a completely finished form;
  • containers with collapsible components - assembly and installation of the structure is carried out directly on site.
