St George Lycabettus Hotel

As Luca and I sat side by side in an almost empty train, exhausted from our early morning flight, I couldn’t stop thinking “we’re actually here”. Athens, we finally made it! A city I had heard so much about. The history, the culture, the FOOD!! I was excited.

As we made our way into the city we began discussing our day’s plans. Our conversation however, was short lived when music from somewhere behind us started getting noticeably louder and louder. Turning around to locate the source, I immediately spotted an elderly gentleman walking through our carriage. He was playing the accordion! Such happy, relaxing and light-hearted music. I absolutely loved it. What a great introduction to Athens I thought. Authentic Greek music within only minutes of being in Greece. As he passed us, I could see he was holding a cup for passengers to put money in. Some did, but if you didn’t, he simply went on his way.

After 30 minutes on the train we arrived at our stop, Evangelismos. As we exited the station and began the short  walk to our accommodation I could feel the Athens heat pleasantly soaking into my skin. Now if you want to live like a Greek goddess and wake up to the perfect view of the Acropolis, then St George Lycabettus Hotel is the place to be!

Not only is St George Lycabettus a visual treat, but it’s also historical. Since 1974, the hotel has welcomed guests from around the world including including well renowned French designer Pierre Cardin. Everyone who visits admires the beauty of the hotels surroundings and the history of its location and association with Lycabettus Hill – linking back to Greek mythology.

The hotel showcases views of the city that stretch all the way to the Saronic Gulf and beyond. During the day, you’re surrounded by beautiful flowers and greenery, and at night, the place transforms into a urban oasis lit by candles. The sunsets from the rooftop are incredible!

St George Lycabettus has all the amenities you’d expect from a luxury hotel. A rooftop pool and bar, in house art gallery, fitness center, spa, private screening room and so much more.

Unlike most hotels the fitness center is more than just your average gym. It has a specialised Pilates and Yoga studio designed where one can work out individually or in private groups of 2-4 people. This place is all about relaxing your spirit, so it was absolutely perfect for us!

Known as one of the best hotels in Athens, you can certainly feel it the minute you step into the rooms. From old photographs of Athens on the walls to bathrooms with Mediterranean inspired tile work, it’s like living in a piece of history. And who can forget the incredible panoramic views of the Acropolis seen from almost every balcony.

You can choose from a variety of rooms and suites, but my favourite is the eco room with coco mat mattresses, linens and accessories. All the furniture in the eco rooms are made from 100% natural materials. I love that this hotel is so luxurious whilst being environmentally friendly too!

My favourite part of our stay was definitely the food! Authentic Mediterranean flavours that melt in your mouth. St George Lycabettus features an all day bar restaurant and once you sit down, you won’t want to leave. From the incredible flavour combinations of each dish to the friendly staff, it was by far my favourite dining experience in Athens. And there’s no better spot to get an authentic moussaka! If I could go back in time just to have this food again, I would!

To compliment your meal the restaurant has an amazing selection of wine. I myself don’t know a whole lot about wine so we went with the waiters recommendation of rose’ and it was perfect. And if you’re feeling in the mood for a cocktail either before or after dinner, then the rooftop bar is the place to be.

In the morning after having a nice lay in and watching the sunrise from your balcony as we did, you can expect to indulge in a gourmet buffet breakfast. There’s just so much choice, from pastries and fruits, to breads, cold meats and an impressive selection of hot items. With the view of the Acropolis right in front of you, it’s definitely the perfect start to your day.

A visit to St George Lycabettus isn’t complete without a trip to its Aegeo Spa. A blissful escape to relaxation with massages, face and body treatments, all customised to your liking. You can even choose to enjoy your massage on the rooftop overlooking the city. Greek goddess treatment for sure!

Location wise, this hotel is perfect. Walking distance to a lot of attractions. Athens has so much to offer and what I loved most was finding those hidden gems as Luca and I explored the city. Walking through small streets that don’t look like they’re going anywhere, seeing the beauty of craftsmanship in the simple yet exquisitely designed Greek houses, it was truly amazing.

Making our way from the city center up to the Acropolis, I was completely mesmerised by the magnitude and detail of the ancient ruins before me. We decided not to pay the entry fee to go inside and view the Acropolis (feeling 20 euros each was a little pricey), instead we made our way to a nearby viewing point which I found to be just as incredible.

Between our stay at St George Lycabettus Hotel and the natural beauty that is Athens, our trip to Greece exceeded my expectations. Next up for us is Cyprus and if Athens is anything to go by, I know it will be incredible!
