How to get rid of the smell of mice in the house

Causes of odor

Soon after rodents settle in the room, a very unpleasant specific smell appears in it, which is rather difficult to describe. According to those who have lived or have been in houses where mice live, this is a combination of ammonia mixed with the musty and sweet smell of something rotten. Anyone who knows this smell will not confuse it with anything and will immediately say that the house smells of mice.

The odor is caused by several reasons at once:

  • mice defecate regularly, accumulating, excrement emit an ever stronger smell;
  • rodents build nests where females reproduce and raise offspring, gradually the material from which is made nest, saturated with the smell of the waste products of mice;
  • mice mark the boundaries of their territory with urine and secretions from sweat glands on their paws;
  • males leave marks that, due to the content of special pheromones, attract females ;
  • when a mouse is frightened, a substance is released into the urine, whose smell serves as a signal of danger to other rodents;
  • the smell can be emitted by the corpse of a dead rodent.

The more mice and the longer they live in the house, the stronger the smell.

Why is it dangerous?

The smell of mice not only gives people serious discomfort, but can also cause material damage. This is due to the fact that the stench is very persistent. It absorbs quickly enough into fabrics, paper, wood surfaces. Soon, upholstered furniture, carpets, curtains, bedding, books, even flooring and wallpaper begin to smell like mice. Sometimes things are so saturated with a smell that it is no longer possible to clean them, all that remains is to throw them away.

Another one the danger is associated with the fact that mice are carriers of a large number of dangerous infectious diseases. The emergence of many of them can be triggered by contact with the excrement of rodents, which contain pathogens. A person can pick up an object on which the urine of a rodent is located (naturally, not knowing about it), and then, for example, go to dinner or touch his face. The infection gets into the body with food or from the hands to the mucous membranes, which will lead to the development of pathology.

For allergy sufferers, traces of mice in the house can cause severe reactions, just as inhaling dust containing tiny particles of mouse excrement can trigger an attack in asthmatics.

How to find the source?

Finding the source of the smell of mice in your home is essential. This is not easy, since amber can emit nests, feces, mouse marks located throughout the house, including in hard-to-reach places. You need to start your search from the attic and basement, as well as the most cluttered rooms. It is their mice that will be chosen for living as the safest. Do not forget about the premises where food is stored, check all cabinets, boxes with vegetables, containers with cereals.

In search of the source of the smell, you can try to focus on its intensity. But such a solution is unlikely to be effective, because the stench quickly spreads, and soon it begins to seem that it comes from everywhere.

Therefore, the best solution is not to search for the source, but a general cleaning, which includes moving the furniture and cleaning all the nooks and crannies.
