Save mothers and children

On the activities of the Institute of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology named after Academician E. M. Lukyanova of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine "(IPAG).

Medicine is the first of the irreplaceable things put on the scales when measuring the humanity of the world.

German universities have philology departments, where the works of Goethe, Schiller or Hölderlin are studied for periods of 10-20 years. This feature of research is a manifestation of depth in the knowledge of the heritage of poets, evidence of the level of their science of literature.

In the State Institution "Institute of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology named after Academician E.M. Lukyanova of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine" (IPAG), a sphere has been developed that is completely focused on the health, growth, diseases and pathologies of children from the first month of their appearance ... Exceptional discipline! What is its meaning and what the metropolitan specialists have achieved in it - we will find out now.

The urgency of changing optics

Neonatology is a section of medicine about the health of newborns up to 28 days of life.

Explanatory dictionary.

Newborns are on a special account in all specialized institutions: maternity hospitals, hospitals, clinical institutions. And even under this condition, neonatology has imperiously changed the approach to medical support of infants, multiplying attention to the first weeks of their life. And the reasons for that are weighty. Scientists have found that exactly 28 days from the date of birth of a child are decisive for the basis of his health for years. During this period, all the shortcomings of the baby's body make themselves felt, and its protective mechanisms are actively formed. These days, the main struggle of doctors for the survival and correct development of premature babies also falls, because the formidable question "To be or not to be?" still occurs in front of a significant percentage of babies. (By the way, the newest medical ethics has changed the term "prematurely" to "prematurely born", but there is a problem, but more on that later).

Neonatologist # 1 in IPAG and the country - Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Tatiana Znamenskaya. She is the deputy director of the Institute for Perinatal Medicine, the head of the specialized department, and in the public field - the president Association of Neonatologists of Ukraine. Tatyana Konstantinovna is the editor of the newest textbook "Neonatology" in 3 volumes, without exaggeration, an encyclopedia of the specialty.

An important detail. While we were interviewing Tatyana Znamenskaya, her younger colleague, Doctor of Medical Sciences Olga Vorobyova, was working next to her at a laptop and wearing headphones. At this time, she participated in the WHO online seminar on neonatology. So, the specialists of the Institute keep their finger on the pulse of the profession in all possible ways. And Tatyana Konstantinovna kindly informed us about the state and prospects of her business. And here's what turned out.

Neonatology is a young and highly demanded industry. For example, in maternity hospitals, babies born prematurely are called "impatient chicks." And the tenderness that is heard in this word cannot diminish the seriousness of the problem. Indeed, now up to 80% of women who apply to IPAG do not give birth to their children properly. They work in an integrated manner - geneticists, ecologists, and fetal medicine specialists. It has not yet been possible to achieve fundamental shifts here, but the doctors do not give up and take care of babies weighing up to 500 grams.

“The problem of saving those born prematurely has been in our medicine for more than 20 years,” says Tatiana Znamenskaya. - And the survival of such children remained impracticable for a long time - they mostly died. However, we grew, studied, acquired skills, introduced new technologies and, in the end, learned to save them. And for some time now we have been able to significantly reduce the disability of this cohort of babies. And now we are fighting for every baby.
